Commitment to Injection Safety

A statement Issued by Manufacturers of Injection Safety Devices, public health experts, members of health ministries, purchasing agencies and other concerned parties

We the undersigned agree:

That the re-use of syringes or contact with a contaminated needle place the public at high risk of disease and death.

Using a sterile syringe and needle once is the only acceptable practice.

Designs of Reuse Prevention Syringes* exist that allow only one full use of the product for Immunization functions (Auto-Disable/AD) and for Curative functions (Re-use Prevention/RP) at an affordable price.

Syringes of many designs to address these issues are already being manufactured, sold and used, and the capacity for production can expand readily.

The production of these Syringes could help eliminate the practice of re-use of syringes or needles, with applicable, support, policy and demand, globally, by 2008.

We the undersigned assert that the conditions required to achieve universal availability and use of syringes to prevent reuse are:

Product Standards: Standards should not specify any design or limit development options -manufacturers, buyers and injection safety experts should be able to participate in the establishment of minimum standards and testing protocol at international, national and local levels.

Open and Transparent Tenders: To achieve required capacity and market reach - involvement by producers of all sizes and types of these Syringes, must be encouraged through fair and open procurement; with product standards, protocols and other conditions, with input from the manufacturing community.

National Legislation: To accelerate the uptake of these Syringes - we urge all national authorities, to work when practicable towards the introduction of National Legislation ensuring use of such products leading to sterile Injections.

*Refers to Syringes that meet ISO standard 7886 part 2 and 3.
